About US Tech 100

The Nasdaq-100 holds the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, making it the cleanest large-cap expression of the US technology and growth trade. Launched in 1985, it uses a modified market-cap weighting that caps the largest names to limit single-stock dominance, and the index is reconstituted annually each December.

Because its constituents are long-duration growth businesses — much of their value rests on profits far in the future — the Nasdaq-100 is unusually sensitive to interest-rate expectations, typically outperforming the S&P 500 when yields fall and lagging when they rise. It is the underlying for the QQQ ETF and the CME's Nasdaq E-mini futures, two of the most actively traded equity instruments in the world.

US Tech 100 — frequently asked questions

What is the US Tech 100 index?

US Tech 100 is the name many brokers and data feeds use for the Nasdaq-100, the index of the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. This page shows its live level with an intraday chart and the day's range. The index is heavily weighted toward mega-cap technology, so a small group of names dominates its moves.

What moves the US Tech 100?

Interest-rate expectations dominate. Most of the index's weight sits in long-duration growth businesses whose value rests on profits far in the future, so it typically outperforms broader benchmarks when yields fall and lags when they rise. Mega-cap earnings reports, US inflation prints and Federal Reserve decisions are the main scheduled catalysts.

What is the difference between the US Tech 100 and the US 500?

The US Tech 100 tracks the Nasdaq-100 - 100 non-financial Nasdaq listings, concentrated in technology - while the US 500 tracks the S&P 500, around 500 companies spread across every sector including financials. The tech index is the narrower and more rate-sensitive of the two, and historically the more volatile.
