About Spain 35

The IBEX 35 is Spain's headline equity benchmark, covering 35 securities traded on the Spanish continuous market (SIBE) operated by Bolsas y Mercados Españoles. The name is short for Índice Bursátil Español, and the index has been calculated by Sociedad de Bolsas since 1992. Its selection rule sets it apart from most national benchmarks: membership is decided by traded volume over a control period rather than by company size, so the index is effectively Spain's 35 most liquid listings, reviewed by a technical advisory committee. Weighting is then by free-float adjusted market capitalisation, and the headline series is a price index, so dividends are excluded.

The index leans structurally on banks, utilities and telecoms, which makes European Central Bank policy a first-order driver — rate expectations feed straight into bank margins and into the valuation of debt-financed regulated utilities. Several of those businesses also earn a large share of revenue in Latin America, so Latin American currencies and emerging-market risk appetite matter here in a way they do not for most eurozone peers. Futures and options on the index are listed on MEFF and settle in cash, so a quoted level can move outside Madrid's cash hours.

Spain 35 — frequently asked questions

What is the Spain 35 index?

Spain 35 is the label many brokers and data feeds use for the IBEX 35, the benchmark tracking 35 of the most liquid securities on the Spanish stock market. It refers to the same underlying index - IBEX is a registered trademark of its provider, so generic names are common. The name is short for Índice Bursátil Español. This page shows the live level with an intraday chart and the day's range.

What companies are in the IBEX 35?

The index holds 35 Spanish-listed companies, but they are not simply the 35 largest. Membership is decided on liquidity - the euro volume each security trades on the Spanish continuous market over a control period - and is reviewed by a technical advisory committee, so companies enter and leave the index over time. Banks, utilities and telecoms have long been the heaviest sectors. Check the exchange or index provider for the current membership list.

When does the Spain 35 trade?

The underlying shares trade on the Spanish continuous market Monday to Friday, excluding Spanish market holidays: an opening auction from 8:30am, continuous trading from 9:00am to 5:30pm, then a short closing auction, all Madrid time (CET in winter, CEST in summer). Futures and options on the index trade on MEFF over longer hours, so an IBEX 35 quote can move while the Madrid cash market is shut.

What moves the IBEX 35?

European Central Bank policy carries unusual weight because banks and utilities make up a large share of the index: rate expectations drive bank margins directly and reprice the debt-financed utilities alongside them. Spanish and eurozone growth and inflation data set the broader tone. The index is also more exposed than most eurozone benchmarks to Latin America, where several of its biggest sectors earn a substantial part of their revenue.
