How this INR gold rate is calculated

We take the live XAU/USD spot price — the US-dollar price of one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of gold — multiply it by the live USD/INR exchange rate, then divide down to grams. Lower karats are scaled by their gold content, so 22K is 22/24 of the 24K figure.

In India gold is usually quoted per 10 grams, and benchmark rates are published daily by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). Retail prices are higher than the spot equivalent shown here, because they include import duty, GST and the jeweller's premium, and jewellery adds making charges.

The rupee price moves with both the international gold price and USD/INR. A weaker rupee lifts the local gold price even when the dollar price of gold is unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price in India today per 10 grams?

The table above shows the live spot-equivalent price of 10 grams of 24K, 22K and 18K gold in INR, converted from XAU/USD and USD/INR. Jewellers' prices are higher, because they add import duty, GST, a premium and making charges.

Why is gold more expensive in India than the international price?

The international price is for wholesale bullion in US dollars. Gold bought in India also carries import duty and GST, plus the dealer's margin, and its rupee price moves with USD/INR.

24K gold is about 99.9% pure and is used mainly for coins and bars. 22K gold is 91.6% gold and is the standard for most Indian jewellery, because the added metals make it harder. It is priced at about 22/24 of the 24K rate.
