About Italy 40
The FTSE MIB is Italy's headline equity benchmark, tracking 40 of the most liquid and highly capitalised shares on Borsa Italiana, the Milan stock exchange that is now part of the Euronext group. It is calculated by FTSE Russell and weighted by free-float-adjusted market capitalisation. Brokers and data feeds often list it as Italy 40. The level is quoted in index points on a euro basis.
The index is heavily weighted toward banks and insurers, with energy and utility groups, carmakers and luxury and industrial companies making up much of the rest. That makes it unusually sensitive to European Central Bank policy, because bank profits depend on interest margins, and to the spread between Italian and German government bond yields, which markets read as a gauge of Italian fiscal and political risk. Energy prices move its oil, gas and power names, and euro-area growth data sets the broader tone.
The market for Italy 40 is currently closed. At the last close it stood at 48,558.86, a move of +175.20 (+0.36%) versus the previous close of 48,383.66, after ranging between 48,024.00 and 48,638.19 over that session. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Sell.

Italy 40 — frequently asked questions
What is the FTSE MIB index?
The FTSE MIB is the benchmark index of the Italian stock market. It holds 40 large, liquid companies listed on Borsa Italiana in Milan, weighted by free-float market capitalisation and calculated by FTSE Russell. Trading platforms often show it as Italy 40; that label refers to the same index.
When does the FTSE MIB trade?
Borsa Italiana's continuous trading session runs from 09:00 to 17:30 Central European Time, Monday to Friday, with an opening auction before and a closing auction after. Italy uses daylight saving, so in UTC terms the session is 08:00 to 16:30 in winter and 07:00 to 15:30 in summer. FTSE MIB futures trade on the exchange's derivatives market.
Why is the FTSE MIB so sensitive to banks and bond spreads?
Banks and insurers make up a large share of the index, so anything that changes their profits moves the whole benchmark. Higher ECB rates tend to widen lending margins, while a wider gap between Italian and German ten-year yields signals greater fiscal or political risk and raises Italian banks' funding costs, as they hold large amounts of Italian government debt. That is why the BTP-Bund spread is watched alongside the index itself.
What does the Italy 40 52-week range show?
The 52-week range is the lowest low and the highest high Italy 40 printed across the past 52 weeks of daily bars, so it shows where the current price sits relative to that year's extremes. Computed from FXMARE's daily price history, the current 52-week range is 41,616.00 – 54,042.00.
