About Shanghai Composite

The Shanghai Composite — formally the SSE Composite Index — is mainland China's headline equity barometer, compiled and published by the Shanghai Stock Exchange itself. It is a composite rather than a blue-chip selection, tracking every company listed on that one exchange, covering the renminbi-denominated A-shares, the smaller pool of US dollar-quoted B-shares and, following a 2020 rule revision, the STAR Market growth board. Constituents are weighted by market capitalisation and the series is based at 100 on 19 December 1990. Because it is a single-exchange index, Shenzhen listings and the Hong Kong-listed H-shares of Chinese companies sit outside it.

China's capital account is only partially open, so the index responds far more to domestic policy and liquidity than to global flows: People's Bank of China rate and reserve-requirement decisions, credit data and state-directed support measures are the recurring catalysts. The exchange's listing base is weighted toward large state-linked banks, insurers, energy producers and industrial groups. Retail investors account for an unusually large share of mainland turnover by developed-market standards, which contributes to sharp momentum swings, and main-board shares carry a daily price-move limit of 10% that caps how far any single constituent can travel in one session.

Shanghai Composite — frequently asked questions

What is the Shanghai Composite index?

The Shanghai Composite, formally the SSE Composite Index, is the headline benchmark for mainland China's largest stock exchange. The Shanghai Stock Exchange calculates it from every company listed on the exchange rather than from a fixed blue-chip sample, weighting each by market capitalisation, and the series is based at 100 on 19 December 1990. This page shows its live level with an intraday chart and the day's range.

Is the China A50 the same as the Shanghai Composite?

No - they are two different indices whose names are often confused. The Shanghai Composite covers every share listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, which makes it a broad market barometer. The FTSE China A50 is a separate 50-stock index built by FTSE Russell from the largest mainland A-share companies across both Shanghai and Shenzhen, and it is best known as the underlying for the cash-settled, US dollar-denominated futures listed in Singapore that offshore investors use to trade mainland exposure.

What companies are in the Shanghai Composite?

Every company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange is included, which is what makes it a composite rather than a selective index: renminbi-denominated A-shares, the smaller pool of US dollar-quoted B-shares, and STAR Market listings admitted under the 2020 rule revision. Membership is not a fixed number and changes as companies list and delist. Shenzhen-listed companies and the Hong Kong-listed H-shares of Chinese groups are not part of it.

When does the Shanghai Composite trade?

The Shanghai Stock Exchange runs two continuous sessions on weekdays, 09:30 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 15:00 China Standard Time (UTC+8), separated by a 90-minute midday break and bracketed by call auctions at the open and the close. China keeps a single time zone year-round and does not observe daylight saving, so those sessions fall at the same UTC hours all year. The exchange also closes for mainland public holidays, including the multi-day Lunar New Year and National Day breaks.
