GOOGL vs GOOG: which Alphabet share is this?

This page tracks GOOGL, Alphabet's Class A share. Alphabet has two publicly traded share classes that represent the same company and the same economic interest: GOOGL (Class A) carries one vote per share, while GOOG (Class C) carries no vote. A third class, the unlisted Class B, carries ten votes per share and is held by the founders and early insiders, which is how they retain control.

Because both listed classes have identical claims on Alphabet's earnings and assets, GOOGL and GOOG trade within a small fraction of each other almost all of the time; when a gap opens it usually reflects index-fund flows or the modest value the market puts on the vote. For a trader the practical differences are liquidity and which class an index or ETF holds - the price moves are, for nearly every purpose, the same.

About GOOGL

Alphabet Inc. is the holding company created in 2015 to house Google and its other ventures. The GOOGL ticker is the Class A share, which carries one vote per share, distinct from the non-voting Class C shares that trade as GOOG — the two usually trade within a narrow spread of each other. Search advertising remains the profit engine, with YouTube, Google Cloud and Android rounding out the core.

Because most revenue comes from advertising, Alphabet is sensitive to the macro ad cycle: marketing budgets are among the first costs companies cut in downturns and the first restored in recoveries. Google Cloud gives investors a second growth narrative against AWS and Azure, while the "Other Bets" segment (including the Waymo autonomous-driving unit) houses the company's long-horizon projects. Antitrust and regulatory rulings are a recurring source of headline risk in both the US and the EU.

GOOGL trades on the Nasdaq in the regular session, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern, Monday to Friday outside exchange holidays — but the Nasdaq publishes two extended-hours windows either side of it: a pre-market session from 4:00am Eastern and an after-hours session running until 8:00pm Eastern. Orders in those windows are matched on electronic networks rather than through the opening and closing auctions, so volume is a fraction of the regular session, spreads are wider and most brokers accept limit orders only. The official closing price still comes from the Nasdaq closing cross at 4:00pm, which is why an after-hours quote can sit away from the closing price printed for the day.

GOOGL — frequently asked questions

What is the GOOGL stock price today?

This page tracks the live price of Alphabet's Class A shares (Nasdaq: GOOGL) with an intraday chart and the day's range through the US regular session, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern. Alphabet is the holding company behind Google Search, YouTube, Android and Google Cloud. Thinner pre-market and after-hours sessions run either side of regular hours where a broker provides access.

When does GOOGL pre-market trading start?

Nasdaq pre-market trading opens at 4:00am Eastern and runs until the regular session begins at 9:30am, so GOOGL can print quotes more than five hours before the opening bell. Access depends on your broker - many open their own pre-market window later, commonly 7:00am or 8:00am Eastern, and accept limit orders only. Volume in that window is a small fraction of regular-session volume. See GOOGL pre-market and after-hours price.

Can I trade Alphabet stock after hours?

Yes, where your broker offers it. The Nasdaq after-hours session runs from 4:00pm to 8:00pm Eastern, straight after the regular close, and orders are matched on electronic networks rather than in an exchange auction. Liquidity is thin, spreads widen and market orders are usually refused, so a single modest order can move the quoted price further than the same order would during the day.

Why is the GOOGL pre-market price different from the closing price?

Because the two come from different mechanisms. The official close is set by the Nasdaq closing cross at 4:00pm Eastern, which concentrates the day's remaining orders into a single auction print. Pre-market and after-hours quotes are individual electronic trades in a much thinner book, so anything released outside regular hours - quarterly results, regulatory decisions, overnight moves in the wider market - gets repriced on light volume and can look more dramatic than it proves at the open. See GOOGL pre-market and after-hours price.

What time does GOOGL trade in UK time?

New York is normally five hours behind London, so the 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern regular session falls at 2:30pm to 9:00pm UK time. Nasdaq pre-market opens around 9:00am UK and after-hours trading runs until roughly 1:00am. That five-hour gap narrows to four for the few weeks each year when the US and UK clock changes fall on different dates.

What is the difference between GOOGL and GOOG?

They are two share classes of the same company. GOOGL is the Class A share and carries one vote per share; GOOG is the Class C share and carries no votes. Their prices normally track each other within a narrow spread. A third class, Class B, carries enhanced voting rights and is not publicly traded. Both listed classes trade in the pre-market and after-hours sessions, where the thinner book can widen the usual gap between them.

What moves the Alphabet share price?

Advertising is the core driver, since Google Search and YouTube ads produce most of Alphabet's revenue - marketing budgets are among the first costs cut in a downturn and the first restored in a recovery. Google Cloud growth, AI competition in search, and antitrust and regulatory rulings are the other recurring movers, with quarterly results the main scheduled event.
