About KOSPI

The KOSPI — the Korea Composite Stock Price Index — is South Korea's headline equity benchmark. It is calculated by the Korea Exchange (KRX) and covers the common stocks listed on the KOSPI market, the exchange's senior board, weighted by market capitalisation so the largest listings move it most. The series runs from a base value of 100 set on 4 January 1980. Platforms often list Korean index exposure under generic labels such as Korea 200; the two benchmarks behind those labels are the KOSPI itself and the KOSPI 200, its large-cap subset of 200 constituents, which is what the exchange's benchmark equity futures and options are written on.

Korea's listed market is concentrated in export manufacturing — semiconductors and electronics, autos, shipbuilding, batteries and petrochemicals — so the index trades as a read on the global technology cycle and on trade demand from China and the United States. Bank of Korea policy and the won are the other first-order drivers, and foreign investors are a large enough presence in Seoul that their daily flows are followed as a sentiment gauge. For an overseas holder the return combines the index move with USD/KRW unless the currency exposure is hedged.

KOSPI — frequently asked questions

What is the KOSPI index?

The KOSPI, or Korea Composite Stock Price Index, is South Korea's headline stock benchmark, compiled by the Korea Exchange from the common stocks on its senior KOSPI market board and weighted by market capitalisation. It is quoted in Korean won and calculated from a base of 100 set on 4 January 1980, so the level measures the market's cumulative move since that date rather than any price in currency terms.

What companies are in the KOSPI?

The KOSPI is not a fixed list of a set number of names - it covers the common stocks on the Korea Exchange's KOSPI market board, so membership changes as companies list, delist or move between boards. Smaller and growth companies list on the separate KOSDAQ market, which has its own index. The mix is dominated by export manufacturers: semiconductors and electronics, autos, shipbuilding, batteries, steel and chemicals, alongside banks and telecom operators.

When does the KOSPI trade?

The Korea Exchange runs its regular session from 09:00 to 15:30 Korea Standard Time, Monday to Friday, with no midday break. Korea does not observe daylight saving, so those hours are a fixed 00:00 to 06:30 UTC all year. A call auction sets the opening price and another sets the close, with single-price sessions either side of regular hours. The market is shut at weekends and on Korean public holidays, including the Lunar New Year and Chuseok closures.

What is the difference between the KOSPI and the KOSPI 200?

The KOSPI is the composite, tracking every common stock on the Korea Exchange's KOSPI market board, which makes it the broad gauge of the Korean market. The KOSPI 200 is a subset of 200 of those constituents chosen for size and liquidity, and it is the index the exchange's benchmark equity futures and options are written on. The two move closely together, but only the KOSPI 200 has a fixed constituent count.
