The FTSE 100 tracks the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalisation. Calculated since 1984 from a base of 1,000 points and maintained by FTSE Russell, it is the UK's headline equity benchmark, with membership reviewed quarterly so companies are promoted and relegated as valuations change.
Its defining feature is how international it is: constituents — heavy in energy, mining, banks and consumer staples — earn a large share of their revenue outside the UK. That gives the index a well-known inverse relationship with sterling: when the pound weakens, overseas earnings translate into more pounds and the FTSE 100 often rises, so the index is frequently a currency story as much as a UK-economy story.
On the session, UK 100 is trading at 10,736.23, a move of +97.06 (+0.91%) versus the previous close of 10,639.17. The instrument has ranged between 10,599.10 and 10,738.83 so far today. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Buy.
