About UK 100

The FTSE 100 tracks the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalisation. Calculated since 1984 from a base of 1,000 points and maintained by FTSE Russell, it is the UK's headline equity benchmark, with membership reviewed quarterly so companies are promoted and relegated as valuations change.

Its defining feature is how international it is: constituents — heavy in energy, mining, banks and consumer staples — earn a large share of their revenue outside the UK. That gives the index a well-known inverse relationship with sterling: when the pound weakens, overseas earnings translate into more pounds and the FTSE 100 often rises, so the index is frequently a currency story as much as a UK-economy story.

UK 100 — frequently asked questions

Where can I see the FTSE 100 chart and level today?

This page shows the live UK 100 quote - the FTSE 100 - with an intraday chart and the day's range. The cash index is calculated in real time through the London Stock Exchange trading day, while futures on the index trade far longer hours, so headline FTSE levels can be quoted and can move while the London market is shut.

Why is the FTSE 100 linked to the pound?

Its constituents - energy, mining, banking and consumer-staples groups - earn a large share of their revenue outside the UK. When sterling weakens, those overseas earnings convert into more pounds and the index tends to rise; a stronger pound works the other way. That is why the FTSE 100 often trades inversely to sterling and reads partly as a currency story.

What is the difference between the FTSE 100 and the FTSE 250?

The FTSE 100 holds the 100 largest London-listed companies, most of them global businesses with heavy overseas revenue. The FTSE 250 covers the next 250 by size and is more domestically focused, so it tends to respond more directly to the UK economy and Bank of England policy. The two are often compared to separate currency effects from domestic ones.
