About Hong Kong 50

The Hang Seng Index is Hong Kong's headline equity benchmark, tracking a selection of the largest and most liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It is compiled by Hang Seng Indexes Company, a subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, and calculated on a free-float-adjusted market-capitalisation basis with a cap limiting how much weight any single constituent may carry, so no one listing can dominate the benchmark. The headline figure is a price index, so it excludes dividends; total-return versions are published separately.

Despite the "Hong Kong 50" label used by brokers and data feeds, membership is not fixed at fifty: the index has been expanded under a phased reform of its rules, and constituents are reviewed quarterly. It spans Hong Kong-domiciled groups alongside mainland Chinese companies listed in the territory — H-shares and red chips — so mainland economic and regulatory news drives it as much as local news does. And because the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority cannot run an independent rate policy and local monetary conditions track the Federal Reserve, giving the index a dual sensitivity to Beijing and Washington.

Hong Kong 50 — frequently asked questions

What is the Hong Kong 50 index?

Hong Kong 50 is the label many brokers and data feeds use for the Hang Seng Index, Hong Kong's headline equity benchmark covering large, liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It refers to the same underlying index - Hang Seng Index is a registered trademark of its compiler, so generic names are common on trading platforms. Membership is not actually fixed at fifty; the index was expanded under a later reform of its rules.

What companies are in the Hang Seng Index?

The index holds large, liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, drawn both from Hong Kong-domiciled groups and from mainland Chinese companies listed in the territory as H-shares or red chips. Banks, insurers, property developers and technology and consumer names are all represented, and constituents are grouped into industry sub-indexes. Membership is reviewed quarterly, so the list changes over time rather than being fixed.

When does the Hang Seng Index trade?

The underlying shares trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange from 09:30 to 12:00 and again from 13:00 to 16:00 Hong Kong time, with a midday break between the two and auction periods at each end of the day. Hong Kong does not observe daylight saving, so those hours stay at UTC+8 all year. Hang Seng Index futures run a longer schedule that includes an after-hours session, which is why a quoted level can move while the cash market is shut.

What moves the Hang Seng Index?

Mainland Chinese growth data, policy announcements and regulatory decisions carry as much weight as Hong Kong's own economy, because many constituents are mainland companies listed in the territory. Southbound Stock Connect flows from mainland investors are a further structural driver. And because the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar, local interest rates follow the Federal Reserve, so US rate expectations feed directly into Hong Kong valuations.
