About AMD

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMD) has designed processors since 1969, when Jerry Sanders and a group of colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor founded the company; it is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Its product lines run from Ryzen processors for desktops and laptops and Threadripper for workstations to EPYC server processors that compete directly with Intel, alongside Radeon graphics and Instinct data-centre accelerators aimed at NVIDIA's territory. The 2022 acquisition of Xilinx added FPGAs and adaptive SoCs used in embedded, networking, aerospace and defence systems, and Advanced Micro Devices also supplies the semi-custom chips inside several generations of games consoles.

Two structural facts shape how the shares trade. First, the company is fabless: it has not owned leading-edge manufacturing since spinning its fabrication plants out into GlobalFoundries in 2009, so its most advanced parts are built by TSMC and its roadmap moves with that foundry's process nodes and capacity allocation. Second, it is one of only a handful of firms with the right to build x86 processors, held through a long-standing cross-licence with Intel — and it was Advanced Micro Devices that authored the AMD64 (x86-64) 64-bit extension the wider industry went on to adopt. The common stock trades on the Nasdaq in US dollars through the regular 9:30am–4:00pm Eastern session and settles T+1. Because the fiscal year is calendar-aligned, results land on roughly the same schedule as most large US technology companies rather than off-cycle the way NVIDIA's do, and semiconductor demand is cyclical enough that the shares have historically swung more than the broad market.

AMD — frequently asked questions

What is the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock price today?

This page shows the live Advanced Micro Devices share price with an intraday chart and the day's range, updating through the US session. The common stock trades on the Nasdaq in US dollars, with regular hours from 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern and thinner pre-market and after-hours sessions either side where a broker provides access. Quotes listed as Advanced Micro Devices, AMD stock or NASDAQ: AMD all refer to the same security.

Is AMD the same company as Advanced Micro Devices?

Yes. AMD is the Nasdaq ticker and the everyday trading name for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., the chip designer founded in 1969 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Data providers list it either way, so a search for the three-letter ticker and a search for the full legal name return the same Nasdaq-listed common stock. The company has used the short form as its brand for decades, including on the Ryzen, Radeon and EPYC product lines.

What does Advanced Micro Devices do?

Advanced Micro Devices designs processors and accelerators and has them manufactured by outside foundries rather than in its own plants. The main lines are Ryzen x86 processors for PCs, Threadripper for workstations, EPYC server processors that compete with Intel, and Radeon graphics and Instinct data-centre accelerators that compete with NVIDIA. The Xilinx business acquired in 2022 adds FPGAs and adaptive computing for embedded and networking use, and the company also builds semi-custom chips for games consoles.

What hours does AMD stock trade?

Advanced Micro Devices trades on the Nasdaq during the regular US session, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern, Monday to Friday. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00am Eastern and after-hours trading until 8:00pm Eastern, where liquidity is thinner and spreads are wider. US exchanges are closed at weekends and on US market holidays, with occasional early closes, and US share trades settle on a T+1 basis.

Does Advanced Micro Devices pay a dividend?

Advanced Micro Devices has historically not paid a cash dividend on its common stock, putting cash into product development and share repurchases instead, so the return to shareholders has come from the share price rather than from income. Dividend policy is set by the board and can change, so check the company's own investor relations materials or your broker's data for the current position before relying on it.

What moves the Advanced Micro Devices share price?

Quarterly results and guidance are the biggest scheduled events, and because the fiscal year is calendar-aligned the company reports on roughly the same cadence as most large US technology firms. Between reports the price tracks expectations for data-centre and AI accelerator demand, the competitive picture against NVIDIA and Intel, the PC and semiconductor cycle, foundry capacity at TSMC, and US export rules on advanced chips.
