About ATHEX
The Athens General Composite Index - the ATHEX Composite Share Price Index - is the main benchmark of Euronext Athens, the Greek stock exchange formerly known as the Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX). It tracks a broad group of the exchange's largest and most traded shares, weighted by market capitalisation, and is the figure usually quoted as the level of the Greek market. The level is quoted in index points on a euro basis.
Greek banks are the heaviest part of the index, alongside energy and power utilities, telecoms, construction and infrastructure groups and tourism-linked companies. Because the banks dominate, European Central Bank policy and the spread between Greek and German government bond yields - the market's gauge of Greek sovereign risk - are first-order drivers, and sovereign credit-rating decisions can move the whole market. Tourism seasons, EU investment funding and energy prices are the other main domestic influences.
The market for ATHEX is currently closed. At the last close it stood at 2,530.46, a move of -57.47 (-2.22%) versus the previous close of 2,587.93, after ranging between 2,513.95 and 2,578.84 over that session. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Sell.

ATHEX — frequently asked questions
What is the Athens General Composite Index?
The Athens General Composite Index is the benchmark of the Greek stock market, calculated by Euronext Athens (the former Athens Stock Exchange) from a broad group of its largest listed shares weighted by market capitalisation. It is also called the ATHEX Composite or the General Index. It is quoted in index points on a euro basis, as Greece uses the euro.
When does the Athens stock market trade?
Trading runs on weekdays: an opening auction from about 10:00 Athens time, continuous trading from about 10:30 to about 17:20, then a closing auction. Greece uses daylight saving, so in UTC the day starts at about 08:00 in winter and 07:00 in summer. The exchange closes on Greek public holidays, which include Orthodox Easter, a date that often differs from Western Easter.
What moves the Greek stock market?
Bank shares carry the most weight, so ECB interest-rate policy and the gap between Greek and German government bond yields matter most; a narrowing spread signals lower sovereign risk and usually supports the banks. Credit-rating decisions, fiscal news and EU funding programmes also move the market, along with tourism trends and energy prices for the utility and refining names.
What does the ATHEX 52-week range show?
The 52-week range is the lowest low and the highest high ATHEX printed across the past 52 weeks of daily bars, so it shows where the current price sits relative to that year's extremes. Computed from FXMARE's daily price history, the current 52-week range is 1,971.65 – 2,745.54.
