The Nifty 50 is India's headline equity benchmark, tracking 50 large companies listed on the National Stock Exchange of India and calculated by NSE Indices, a subsidiary of the exchange. Most brokers and data feeds label the tradable version India 50, because Nifty is a registered trademark. Weighting is by free-float market capitalisation, so only the shares genuinely available to trade count toward a company's influence, and membership is rules-based rather than committee-chosen: constituents must be NSE-listed, available in the exchange's futures and options segment, and clear published liquidity and free-float thresholds.
Structurally the index reads as a domestic-growth story with two external variables layered on top. Reserve Bank of India policy, domestic inflation and foreign portfolio investment flows set the medium-term tone, while crude oil carries unusual weight because India imports most of what it consumes — a higher oil price widens the import bill and pressures both the rupee and inflation. The rupee itself cuts both ways: a weaker currency raises costs for importers but lifts the reported earnings of the index's large IT-services exporters. The headline series is a price-return index; NSE also publishes total-return versions that assume dividends are reinvested.

When does the Nifty 50 trade?
The underlying shares trade on the National Stock Exchange from 9:15am to 3:30pm India Standard Time, Monday to Friday, after a pre-open auction from 9:00am and excluding NSE holidays. India does not observe daylight saving, so IST stays at UTC+5:30 year-round and the session shifts against London and New York when their clocks change. Futures on the index trade far longer hours, so a quoted level can move while Mumbai is shut.
What is the difference between the Nifty 50 and the Sensex?
The Nifty 50 is the National Stock Exchange's benchmark of 50 companies; the Sensex is the BSE's benchmark of 30. Both are free-float market-capitalisation weighted and both are led by India's largest listed companies, so they tend to move closely together - but they are maintained by different providers from different exchanges' prices, their membership does not fully overlap, and derivatives on each trade on their own exchange.
