The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the oldest headline US equity index still in daily use, first calculated by Charles Dow in 1896. It contains just 30 blue-chip US companies selected by committee, and despite the historical name its membership long ago broadened far beyond industrials into technology, healthcare, finance and consumer names.
The Dow's defining quirk is that it is price-weighted: a stock's influence depends on its share price, not the company's size, so a high-priced share moves the average more than a far larger company with a lower price — the reason index professionals treat the S&P 500 as the more representative benchmark. The Dow nonetheless remains the index most quoted in mainstream news, and its round-number milestones carry outsized psychological weight.
On the session, US 30 is trading at 50,848.75, a move of +929.97 (+1.86%) versus the previous close of 49,918.78. The instrument has ranged between 49,972.07 and 50,968.95 so far today. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Buy.
