About S&P/TSX Composite

Canada 60 is a platform label for Canada's headline stock benchmark, the S&P/TSX Composite Index. It tracks eligible common shares listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, which TMX Group operates, and is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices under published rules covering listing, liquidity and minimum index weight. Weighting is by float-adjusted market capitalisation, so the largest freely traded companies move it most. The index carries the lineage of the TSE 300 Composite, renamed after Standard & Poor's took over its calculation, and the headline level is a price index quoted in Canadian dollars — a total-return version that reinvests dividends is published separately.

What moves it is largely what is in it. Canadian listings concentrate in banks and insurers, energy producers and mining companies, with comparatively little large-cap technology, so crude oil and metal prices feed into the index far more directly than they do into US benchmarks. Bank of Canada policy, bank earnings and domestic credit conditions drive the financials block, while US growth and Federal Reserve expectations spill over because so much Canadian trade crosses that border. The Canadian dollar responds to the same commodity forces, so the index and the currency often read as one story.

S&P/TSX Composite — frequently asked questions

What is the Canada 60 index?

Canada 60 is a generic platform label for Canada's headline equity benchmark; on this page it tracks the S&P/TSX Composite Index, the broad measure of Toronto Stock Exchange listings maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices. Names vary between providers, and similar labels are sometimes used for the S&P/TSX 60 - a narrower 60-stock large-cap index drawn from the same family - so check which index your platform quotes.

What companies are in the S&P/TSX Composite?

Membership is rules-based rather than fixed: S&P Dow Jones Indices includes eligible common shares listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange that meet published tests on liquidity and minimum index weight, and the roster changes as companies qualify, merge or drop out. In character the index is dominated by banks and insurers, energy producers and mining companies, with far less large-cap technology than US benchmarks. The current constituent list is published by the index provider.

What moves the S&P/TSX Composite?

Its sector make-up does most of the work. Energy and mining weights mean crude oil and metal prices transmit into the index directly, while banks and insurers tie it to Bank of Canada policy, bank earnings and domestic credit and housing conditions. Because Canadian trade is heavily oriented toward the United States, US data and Federal Reserve expectations matter too, and the Canadian dollar usually moves on the same commodity forces.

When does the S&P/TSX Composite trade?

The underlying shares trade in the Toronto Stock Exchange cash session, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. The exchange follows the Canadian holiday calendar, so it closes on days such as Victoria Day and Canada Day when US markets are open, and stays open on some US holidays - a mismatch worth checking before holding index positions. Derivatives referencing the index quote over longer hours, so a level can move while Toronto is shut.
