About US 2000
The Russell 2000 is the standard benchmark for US small-cap equities. FTSE Russell builds it out of the Russell 3000, its broad measure of the US market: the largest members form the Russell 1000, and the roughly 2,000 smaller companies left over form the Russell 2000. Membership is therefore settled by size rank under published rules rather than by a selection committee, and constituents are listed mainly on the NYSE and Nasdaq. Weighting is by float-adjusted market capitalisation, so only shares actually available to public investors count.
Because its members are smaller and earn more of their revenue at home, the index reads as a gauge of the domestic US economy rather than of global mega-cap earnings. Smaller companies also lean harder on bank and floating-rate borrowing, which makes interest-rate expectations and credit conditions unusually important here, and small-cap performance relative to the large-cap benchmarks is widely watched as a read on market breadth. FTSE Russell's reconstitution is the calendar event small-cap traders mark, since index funds must trade the additions and deletions.

What is the Russell 2000 index?
The Russell 2000 is the benchmark for US small-cap shares: the roughly 2,000 smaller companies inside FTSE Russell's Russell 3000 universe - everything in that universe outside the large-cap Russell 1000. Many platforms and data providers quote it under a generic label such as US 2000, because Russell 2000 is a registered trademark of its provider, but it refers to the same underlying index.
What companies are in the Russell 2000?
Smaller US companies from across a wide range of industries, listed mainly on the NYSE and Nasdaq. Membership is decided mechanically by size rank rather than by a committee: at each reconstitution FTSE Russell re-ranks the US market, so companies that have grown move up into the Russell 1000 and those that have shrunk drop back down. Turnover is higher than in the large-cap benchmarks, which is why any membership list is only a snapshot.
When does the Russell 2000 trade?
The cash index is calculated through the US equity session, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern Time, on New York trading days. Futures on the index - CME Group's E-mini Russell 2000 contract - trade nearly around the clock on weekdays, and index CFDs track those futures, so a quoted level keeps moving outside cash hours and reacts to overnight news before New York opens.
How is the Russell 2000 different from the S&P 500?
They cover different size segments and are built differently. The S&P 500 holds around 500 large US companies chosen by an S&P Dow Jones Indices committee, and float-adjusted weighting concentrates it in the biggest names. The Russell 2000 takes the roughly 2,000 smaller companies of the Russell 3000 by size rank alone, so it is far less top-heavy, more domestically focused, and more sensitive to interest rates and credit conditions.
