About Switzerland 20

The Swiss Market Index (SMI) is Switzerland's blue-chip benchmark: 20 of the largest and most liquid stocks drawn from the wider Swiss Performance Index universe, all listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, which also calculates and maintains the index. It was introduced in 1988 with a base value of 1,500 points and is quoted in Swiss francs. Weighting is by free-float market capitalisation, but a capping rule limits how much of the index any single company may represent — a necessary safeguard in a 20-member benchmark where a handful of heavyweights would otherwise dominate outright.

The membership skews defensive — pharmaceuticals and healthcare, consumer staples, then banking, insurance and industrials — which is why the SMI often behaves differently from more cyclical European indices. Its constituents are large multinationals earning most of their revenue abroad, so the index carries a currency dimension: a stronger Swiss franc shrinks those foreign earnings once translated home, making Swiss National Bank policy and safe-haven flows into the franc part of the story. The headline SMI is a price index; a separate total-return version (SMIC) adds reinvested dividends.

Switzerland 20 — frequently asked questions

What is the Switzerland 20 index?

Switzerland 20 is the label many brokers and data feeds use for the Swiss Market Index, or SMI, Switzerland's blue-chip benchmark of 20 large and liquid companies listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. It refers to the same underlying index - the SMI name belongs to the exchange, so generic labels are common on trading platforms. This page shows the live level with an intraday chart and the day's range.

What companies are in the Swiss Market Index?

The SMI holds 20 of the largest and most liquid Swiss stocks, selected from the broader Swiss Performance Index universe on size and turnover. The mix leans defensive - pharmaceuticals and healthcare, consumer staples, banking, insurance and industrials - and it is concentrated, which is why a capping rule limits how much weight any one member can carry. Membership changes at index reviews, so the current constituent list is published by SIX.

When does the Switzerland 20 index trade?

The underlying shares trade on the SIX Swiss Exchange from 9:00am to 5:20pm Swiss time (CET in winter, CEST in summer), Monday to Friday, followed by a closing auction, and the cash index is calculated through that session. Swiss public holidays differ from the rest of Europe, so the SIX calendar is worth checking. Futures and options on the SMI are listed on Eurex and trade longer hours, which is why a quoted level can move while Zurich is shut.

What moves the SMI?

Because a 20-member index is dominated by a few very large multinationals, results and guidance from those heavyweights can move the whole benchmark. The Swiss franc matters unusually much as well: constituents earn most of their revenue abroad, so a stronger franc reduces those earnings once translated back into francs. Swiss National Bank policy, European Central Bank decisions and eurozone growth data - Switzerland's largest export market - are the recurring scheduled catalysts.
