About HSTECH
The Hang Seng TECH Index tracks the largest technology-themed companies listed in Hong Kong, selected under Hang Seng Indexes Company rules. Hang Seng Indexes Company, the provider of the main Hang Seng Index, launched it in July 2020. From launch until the index adjustment of 7 December 2026 it held a fixed 30 companies: the largest by market capitalisation among Hong Kong main board stocks with a qualifying technology theme, such as internet platforms, e-commerce, cloud and digital services or fintech, that also passed the index's research-and-development or revenue-growth screens. Weights follow free-float-adjusted market capitalisation, with a single company capped at 8%, and membership is reviewed every quarter.
After a public consultation, Hang Seng Indexes Company announced in October 2026 that the index expands from 30 to 50 constituents at the index adjustment effective 7 December 2026. From that adjustment, candidates come from the constituents of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap & MidCap Index; the 40 largest by market capitalisation are selected, and the other 10 are chosen for revenue growth over the previous 12 months. The technology themes are revised to six: digital platforms and solutions, artificial intelligence, advanced hardware, robotics and automation, cloud, and frontier technology. The 8% cap on a single company and the quarterly reviews are unchanged.
Most constituents are mainland Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, so the index reacts to mainland growth data, consumer spending, Beijing's regulation of internet platforms and US-China relations on chips and technology exports. It is narrower and usually more volatile than the Hang Seng Index, which spans banks, insurers, property and energy as well as technology. Many of its members also appear in the Hang Seng Index, so the two often move in the same direction, with the TECH index tending to move further. The level is quoted in index points on a Hong Kong dollar basis, and because the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar, local interest rates follow the Federal Reserve.
The market for HSTECH is currently closed. At the last close it stood at 3,871.66, a move of +77.73 (+2.05%) versus the previous close of 3,793.93, after ranging between 3,781.23 and 3,896.93 over that session.

HSTECH — frequently asked questions
What is the Hang Seng TECH Index?
The Hang Seng TECH Index, often shortened to HSTECH, measures the largest technology-themed companies listed in Hong Kong, selected under Hang Seng Indexes Company rules. Hang Seng Indexes Company, which also calculates the Hang Seng Index, weights the members by free-float market capitalisation and caps any single company at 8%. Membership is reviewed every quarter, so the list of companies changes over time. The index held 30 companies from its 2020 launch and expands to 50 at the index adjustment effective 7 December 2026.
How is the Hang Seng TECH Index changing in December 2026?
Hang Seng Indexes Company announced in October 2026, after a public consultation, that the index expands from 30 to 50 constituents at the index adjustment effective 7 December 2026. From then, candidates are drawn from the constituents of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap & MidCap Index instead of all main board stocks. The 40 largest by market capitalisation are selected, and the other 10 are chosen for revenue growth over the previous 12 months. The technology themes are revised to six: digital platforms and solutions, artificial intelligence, advanced hardware, robotics and automation, cloud, and frontier technology. The 8% cap on a single company is unchanged. Hang Seng Indexes Company publishes the constituent list for each review.
When does the Hang Seng TECH Index trade?
The index is calculated while its shares trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange: a pre-opening auction from 09:00, a morning session from 09:30 to 12:00, a lunch break, an afternoon session from 13:00 to 16:00 and a closing auction that ends a few minutes after 16:00, all in Hong Kong Time (UTC+8, no daylight saving). In UTC that is about 01:30 to 04:00 and 05:00 to 08:10. The exchange is closed at weekends and on Hong Kong public holidays.
How is the Hang Seng TECH Index different from the Hang Seng Index?
The Hang Seng Index is Hong Kong's broad benchmark and includes banks, insurers, property developers and energy companies as well as technology names. The Hang Seng TECH Index holds only technology companies, so it is narrower and usually more volatile. Many companies belong to both, which is why the two often move in the same direction on the same day, with the TECH index tending to move further.
What moves the Hang Seng TECH Index?
Most of its members are mainland Chinese technology companies, so Chinese growth and consumer data, Beijing's regulation of internet platforms and US-China tensions over chips and technology exports carry the most weight. Global technology shares and US interest-rate expectations matter too, because the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar and local rates follow the Federal Reserve.
