About Brazil 50

Bovespa — formally the Ibovespa — is Brazil's headline equity benchmark and the most widely followed index in Latin America. It is calculated by B3 (Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão), the São Paulo exchange, and has been published since 1968. Membership is decided by liquidity: assets qualify on their share of trading activity on B3, and the portfolio is rebuilt three times a year, each version standing for four months. Weights are then set by free-float market value, subject to a cap that limits how far one asset can dominate. Unlike most headline benchmarks the Ibovespa is a total-return index, so cash distributions from its constituents are reinvested in the calculation rather than stripped out.

Brazil's listed market is concentrated in commodity producers, banks and utilities, making the index a direct read on raw-material demand — iron ore, crude oil and agricultural exports — and on domestic credit conditions. The Selic policy rate set by the Banco Central do Brasil's Copom committee and the level of the real are the two domestic levers traders watch, while foreign portfolio flows tie the index to global emerging-market risk appetite. Because it is quoted in reais, a foreign holder's return combines the index move with the BRL exchange rate.

Brazil 50 — frequently asked questions

What is the Brazil 50 index?

Brazil 50 is the generic label platforms and data feeds use for the Bovespa index - formally the Ibovespa - the benchmark for Brazil's stock market, calculated by the São Paulo exchange B3 since 1968. This page shows its live level with an intraday chart and the day's range. Treat the number in the label as a platform naming convention rather than a constituent count.

What companies are in the Bovespa index?

Membership is driven by liquidity: assets qualify on their share of trading activity on B3 over the review period, and the portfolio is rebuilt three times a year, so the line-up changes. Brazilian companies often list more than one class of share - common and preferred - and each class is counted separately, which is why the count of listed assets can exceed the number of companies. B3 publishes the current portfolio and each rebalance.

When does the Bovespa index trade?

The cash index is calculated through B3's São Paulo trading session on Brazilian business days; B3 publishes the exact opening and closing times and the holiday calendar. Brazil discontinued daylight saving in 2019, so Brasília time stays at UTC-3 all year while New York and London shift - the overlap with those sessions moves by an hour twice a year. Index futures trade a longer session than the cash market, and CFD hours are set by each broker.

What moves the Bovespa index?

Commodity prices come first, because Brazil's largest listed companies are concentrated in mining, oil and agriculture-linked businesses. Domestically, the Selic rate decisions of the Banco Central do Brasil's Copom committee drive both bank earnings and the discount rate applied to every other constituent. The real matters twice over: it affects exporters' revenue and it converts the index level for foreign investors, whose portfolio flows respond to global emerging-market sentiment.
