About France 40
The CAC 40 is France's headline equity benchmark, tracking 40 of the largest and most actively traded companies listed on Euronext Paris. The name abbreviates Cotation Assistée en Continu — "continuous assisted quotation" — after the electronic trading system in use when the index was launched with a base value of 1,000 points set at 31 December 1987. Euronext calculates it and weights members by free-float market capitalisation, so only shares genuinely available to trade count toward a company's influence. Membership is revised at scheduled reviews by an independent index committee rather than changing continuously.
Structurally the index is far more international than the national economy it is named after: constituents span luxury goods, energy, banking, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, industrials and utilities, and a large share of their revenue is earned outside France. Global demand and the euro exchange rate therefore matter alongside domestic news, with European Central Bank decisions, eurozone inflation and French political and fiscal events the main scheduled catalysts. The headline CAC 40 is a price index, so dividends are excluded from the quoted level — a difference worth remembering when comparing it against total-return benchmarks such as the DAX.
France 40 last traded at 8,065.02, a move of -75.57 (-0.93%) versus the previous close of 8,140.59, after ranging between 8,046.04 and 8,161.07 over that session. We could not confirm that this market is open right now, so treat the quote as delayed. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Sell.

France 40 — frequently asked questions
What is the France 40 index?
France 40 is the label many brokers and data providers use for the CAC 40, France's benchmark index of 40 large companies listed on Euronext Paris. It refers to the same underlying index - the CAC 40 name is trademarked by its index provider, so generic labels are common on trading platforms. This page shows the live level with an intraday chart and the day's range.
What companies are in the CAC 40?
The index holds 40 of the largest and most heavily traded companies listed on Euronext Paris, spanning luxury goods, energy, banking, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, industrials and utilities. Members are ranked on free-float market capitalisation and turnover, and the list is revised at scheduled reviews by an independent index committee, so it changes over time. Euronext publishes the current constituents, which is the list worth checking rather than any static copy of it.
When does the CAC 40 trade?
The underlying shares trade on Euronext Paris from 9:00am to 5:30pm Paris time, Monday to Friday, with a closing auction that sets the official close and no trading on Euronext holidays. Futures and CFDs on the index trade far longer hours, which is why a quoted France 40 level can already have moved on overnight news by the time the Paris cash session opens.
Does the CAC 40 include dividends?
No. The headline CAC 40 is a price index, so it reflects only the share-price moves of its members and the level dips mechanically when large constituents go ex-dividend. Euronext publishes separate total-return versions that reinvest dividends. That distinction matters in long-run comparisons, because Germany's DAX is normally quoted as a total-return index and so flatters a like-for-like chart against price-only peers.
