About Platinum
Platinum is a dense, corrosion-resistant precious metal and the best-known member of the platinum group metals (PGMs), alongside palladium and rhodium. It is far scarcer than gold in annual mine output, and production is highly concentrated: South Africa's Bushveld Complex supplies the large majority of the world's mined platinum, with Russia a distant second and Zimbabwe and North America smaller producers. The price quoted on this page follows the front-month NYMEX platinum futures contract in US dollars per troy ounce, the benchmark most brokers' platinum CFDs track.
Unlike gold, platinum is mainly an industrial metal. The largest single use is in autocatalysts, which clean exhaust from vehicles — historically diesel engines above all — and it is also used in jewellery, in chemical and petroleum refining, in glass-making and in medical devices, with investment demand through bars, coins and exchange-traded funds on top. Because of that industrial weighting, platinum tends to react to the car-manufacturing cycle and industrial growth more than to the safe-haven flows that drive gold.
Supply shocks matter as much as demand. Power shortages, wage disputes and mine safety stoppages in South Africa have repeatedly tightened supply, and sanctions or export disruption affecting Russian metal feed through to price as well. Traders also watch substitution between platinum and palladium in catalytic converters, the pace of the shift to electric vehicles, which need no autocatalyst, and platinum's use in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers as a possible longer-term source of demand.
The market for Platinum is currently closed. At the last close it stood at 1,693.30, a move of +51.30 (+3.12%) versus the previous close of 1,642.00, after ranging between 1,646.00 and 1,710.00 over that session. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Sell.

Platinum — frequently asked questions
What is the platinum price today?
This page shows the live platinum price in US dollars per troy ounce, following the front-month NYMEX futures contract, with an intraday chart and the day's range. Broker CFD prices on platinum track the same benchmark but can differ slightly by spread and by which futures month the broker references.
What moves the price of platinum?
Mainly industrial demand and supply disruption. Car production and the demand for autocatalysts drive the biggest share of use, while power cuts, strikes and safety stoppages at South African mines can tighten supply quickly. The dollar, substitution with palladium, electric-vehicle adoption and interest in hydrogen technology are the other main influences.
Why is platinum cheaper than gold?
Platinum is rarer than gold in the ground, but its price depends on industrial demand rather than on central-bank and safe-haven buying. Gold is held as a reserve asset and a store of value; platinum is mostly consumed by industry, so when car and industrial demand weakens, its price can fall well below gold's.
What is the difference between platinum and palladium?
Both are platinum group metals used in catalytic converters, but palladium has traditionally been used more in petrol engines and platinum more in diesel engines. Manufacturers can partly substitute one for the other, so a large price gap between them tends to shift demand toward the cheaper metal over time.
