About Gasoline

This quote tracks RBOB gasoline — Reformulated Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending — the US wholesale gasoline benchmark traded as futures on NYMEX (CME Group) under the ticker RB. It is quoted in US dollars per gallon and settles by physical delivery in New York Harbor, the hub for the US East Coast refined-products market. RBOB is the blendstock that becomes finished pump gasoline once ethanol is added, so the price you see here sits upstream of the retail price, before taxes, distribution and the ethanol blend.

Because gasoline is a refined product, its price starts with the cost of crude oil and then adds the refining margin — the gasoline "crack spread" that traders watch as a market in its own right. Refinery utilisation and unplanned outages, hurricane season along the US Gulf Coast where much of the refining capacity sits, and the swing between winter-grade and the costlier, lower-volatility summer-grade specification all shape the price beyond what crude alone explains. Demand follows the US driving season and, over longer horizons, fuel-efficiency and vehicle-fleet trends.

The headline scheduled release is the weekly EIA Petroleum Status Report, which prints gasoline inventories, refinery runs and implied demand alongside the crude figures; a large surprise in gasoline stocks can move RBOB sharply even when crude barely reacts. Traders also follow the calendar spread between contract months, which is unusually seasonal for this commodity because of the specification change each spring. The front-month contract shown here rolls every month, so the chart will show a step whenever the reference contract changes.

Gasoline — frequently asked questions

What is the RBOB gasoline price today?

This page tracks the live front-month RBOB gasoline futures price in US dollars per gallon, as traded on NYMEX (CME Group) under the ticker RB. It is the wholesale blendstock price for the US market, delivered in New York Harbor, and sits upstream of the retail pump price before taxes, distribution costs and ethanol blending are added. The quote updates through the session; use the chart to see today's range against recent trading.

What does RBOB stand for and how is it different from pump gasoline?

RBOB is Reformulated Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending — the unfinished gasoline that refineries ship to terminals, where ethanol is blended in to make the finished fuel sold at the pump. The futures contract prices that blendstock, not retail gasoline, so the two move together but are separated by taxes, transport, blending, retail margins and a lag of days to weeks between wholesale and pump prices.

What moves the RBOB gasoline price?

Crude oil sets the base, and the refining margin — the gasoline crack spread — sits on top of it. Refinery utilisation and unplanned outages, hurricane season on the US Gulf Coast, the annual switch between winter-grade and the costlier summer-grade specification, and the strength of US driving-season demand are the main product-specific drivers. The weekly EIA report, with its gasoline inventory and implied-demand figures, is the headline scheduled release.

What hours do RBOB gasoline futures trade?

RBOB futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, 6:00pm to 5:00pm US Eastern Time with a one-hour daily break — roughly 22:00 to 21:00 UTC during US summer time and 23:00 to 22:00 UTC in winter. Liquidity is deepest during US daytime hours, especially around the EIA report and the daily settlement window, and thinnest in the overnight Asian session.
