About DOT/USD

Polkadot is a layer-0 blockchain network whose mainnet launched in 2020, created by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood and stewarded by the Swiss-based Web3 Foundation. Rather than running applications directly, its central relay chain provides shared security and consensus for a set of connected, purpose-built blockchains called parachains, which can pass messages and assets between one another. DOT is the network's native token, and DOT/USD expresses how many US dollars one DOT buys. Like other major crypto assets it trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no exchange bell and no weekend close.

DOT has three structural roles inside the protocol: it is staked to secure the relay chain under Polkadot's nominated proof-of-stake model, it carries voting weight in the network's on-chain governance, and it is used to pay for blockspace on the relay chain. Parachain projects originally secured their slots by bonding large amounts of DOT for the length of a lease, a mechanism the network has since been moving away from in favour of buying blockspace more flexibly. DOT has no hard supply cap: new tokens are issued continuously to reward stakers, so the circulating supply grows over time rather than tending toward a fixed ceiling as Bitcoin's does.

As a mid-sized, non-Bitcoin crypto asset — an "altcoin" in market shorthand — DOT tends to move with the broader crypto cycle and with Bitcoin in particular, usually with larger percentage swings in both directions. Beyond that beta, its own drivers are protocol-specific: the pace at which applications and parachains launch on the network, the share of supply locked in staking versus available on exchanges, governance decisions that change issuance or blockspace rules, and the state of the Web3 Foundation's treasury and grant activity. Macro liquidity conditions and US dollar strength matter too, since crypto as a whole has traded as a high-beta risk asset.

DOT/USD — frequently asked questions

What is the live DOT/USD price?

This page shows the live Polkadot price against the US dollar with an intraday chart and 24-hour range. DOT trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week across global crypto exchanges, so the quote updates continuously and there is no daily settlement or weekend gap. The figure is the spot rate for one DOT expressed in US dollars.

What is Polkadot and what is DOT used for?

Polkadot is a network whose central relay chain provides shared security for a set of connected, specialised blockchains called parachains. DOT is its native token, used for three things: it is staked to secure the relay chain, it carries voting weight in on-chain governance, and it is used to pay for blockspace. It is not designed as a fixed-supply monetary asset in the way Bitcoin is.

What moves the Polkadot price?

The broader crypto cycle is the dominant influence: DOT tends to follow Bitcoin's direction with larger percentage swings. Its own catalysts are protocol-specific - how much activity launches on the network, the share of supply locked in staking rather than sitting on exchanges, governance changes to issuance or blockspace rules, and ecosystem funding. Macro liquidity and the US dollar also matter because crypto trades as a risk asset.

Does DOT have a maximum supply like Bitcoin?

No. Polkadot has no hard supply cap. New DOT is issued continuously to reward validators and the nominators who stake with them, so total supply grows over time. The rate of issuance and how it is split between stakers and the on-chain treasury are governance parameters that token holders can vote to change, which is one reason governance proposals are themselves watched by traders.
