About Gold

XAU/USD is the spot price of gold quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. The metal trades over the counter around the clock on weekdays, with the deepest liquidity in the London bullion market (LBMA) and the COMEX futures market in New York. Gold pays no income, so its single most reliable macro driver is US real (inflation-adjusted) yields: when real yields fall, the opportunity cost of holding gold drops and the price tends to rise, and vice versa.

Gold's second pillar is its role as a safe-haven and reserve asset. Demand typically firms during geopolitical or financial stress, and central banks — particularly in emerging markets — hold gold as part of official reserves and have been notable buyers in recent years. A weaker US dollar also tends to support the price, since gold becomes cheaper in other currencies.

Gold — frequently asked questions

What is the gold/silver ratio and why does it matter?

The gold/silver ratio is how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold - the XAU/USD price divided by the XAG/USD silver spot price. Because silver is smaller, more industrial and more volatile, the ratio swings across a wide range, and traders read its extremes as a sign the two metals' relative pricing is stretched. Both metals respond to US real yields and the dollar, so the ratio isolates the relative-value signal that the outright gold price alone does not show.

What is the XAU/USD gold price right now?

The chart and quote on this page track the live spot gold price in US dollars per troy ounce, updating through the trading session. Spot gold trades nearly 24 hours a day on weekdays, so the price you see here moves continuously from the Sunday-evening open to the Friday close (US time). The pair is written both XAU/USD and XAUUSD — they are the same instrument, and XAU is the ISO 4217 code for one troy ounce of gold.

What moves the gold price?

The most reliable driver is US real (inflation-adjusted) yields: when real yields fall, gold tends to rise, and vice versa. The US dollar is second — a weaker dollar usually supports gold. On top of those, safe-haven demand during geopolitical or financial stress, central-bank buying and major US data releases (CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls, Fed decisions) produce gold's sharpest moves.

What hours can I trade gold?

Spot gold trades roughly 23 hours a day, five days a week, with a short daily settlement break. Liquidity and volatility are highest during the London–New York overlap (about 1pm–5pm GMT), which is when spreads are usually tightest. The Asian session is typically the quietest stretch.

How much is one pip worth in gold trading?

With the common two-decimal quote, one pip on XAU/USD is a 0.01 move — worth about $1 per standard lot (100 oz), $0.10 per mini lot and $0.01 per micro lot, so a full $1 move in the gold price is 100 pips. Conventions vary by broker, so check how yours quotes gold before sizing a trade.

What does the Gold 52-week range show?

The 52-week range is the lowest low and the highest high Gold printed across roughly the past year of daily bars, so it shows where the current price sits relative to that year's extremes. Computed from FXMARE's daily price history, the current 52-week range is 3,901.30 – 5,586.20.
