The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, another of the original 1998 sector SPDRs, holds the energy companies of the S&P 500 — integrated oil majors, exploration and production firms, refiners and oil-services companies. It is a notably concentrated fund: the sector contains relatively few index members, and the two largest integrated majors typically account for a substantial share of its weight.
XLE's fortunes track the economics of oil and gas: crude benchmarks drive upstream earnings, refining margins move the downstream names, and the sector's heavy dividend culture appeals to income investors. The fund often behaves differently from the broad market — energy has historically been one of the sectors most capable of rallying during inflationary phases that pressure other equities.
On the session, XLE is trading at 57.12, a move of -1.13 (-1.94%) versus the previous close of 58.25. The instrument has ranged between 57.05 and 58.99 so far today. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Sell.
