The ARK Innovation ETF, launched in 2014 by ARK Investment Management — the firm founded by Cathie Wood — is the best-known actively managed thematic ETF. Rather than tracking an index, its managers pick a concentrated portfolio of companies they class as "disruptive innovation": genomics, fintech, autonomous technology, AI and next-generation internet businesses.
ARKK discloses its full holdings daily, unusual transparency that has made its trades a market talking point in their own right. The strategy's concentration in early-stage, often unprofitable growth companies produces some of the highest volatility of any large ETF and wide performance swings versus broad benchmarks in both directions — and its long-duration growth profile makes it acutely sensitive to interest-rate expectations.
