The iShares Russell 2000 ETF is the principal vehicle for US small-cap exposure, tracking the Russell 2000 — the 2,000 smaller companies within the broad Russell 3000 universe. FTSE Russell rebuilds its indices in an annual reconstitution each June, a flow event that small-cap traders mark on the calendar.
Small caps behave differently from the mega-cap benchmarks: constituents earn a larger share of revenue domestically, making the index a purer read on the US economy, and they tend to be more sensitive to credit conditions and interest rates than large caps. IWM is heavily used on both sides of the market — as a long expression of US cyclical strength and as a liquid hedging and shorting instrument, with an active options market.
On the session, IWM is trading at 290.41, a move of +8.36 (+2.96%) versus the previous close of 282.05. The instrument has ranged between 284.07 and 291.02 so far today. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Buy.
