About USD/INR
USD/INR is the price of one US dollar in Indian rupees. The rupee is a managed-floating currency: the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lets the market set the rate but regularly buys or sells dollars from its foreign-exchange reserves to smooth sharp moves, so USD/INR usually trends more gradually than freely floating pairs. The rupee is convertible for trade and current-account payments but not fully on the capital account, and a large offshore non-deliverable forward (NDF) market prices it outside India alongside the onshore market.
India imports most of its crude oil, so higher oil prices widen the trade deficit and tend to weaken the rupee. Portfolio flows are the other big driver: when foreign investors buy Indian equities and bonds the rupee firms, and when they sell it weakens. Interest-rate differences between the RBI and the US Federal Reserve, the broad strength of the dollar, and India's inflation and current-account data all feed into the rate.
For Indian residents, currency derivatives may be traded only on recognised Indian exchanges such as the NSE and BSE, within the pairs the RBI permits; trading forex through overseas online platforms is not allowed, and the RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised platforms. The live price on this page is for information and applies worldwide.
The market for USD/INR is currently closed. At the last close it stood at 96.73, a move of -0.05 (-0.05%) versus the previous close of 96.78, after ranging between 96.73 and 96.78 over that session. FXMARE's technical engine currently reads the setup as Strong Buy.

USD/INR — frequently asked questions
What is the USD to INR rate today?
This page shows the live USD/INR rate, meaning how many rupees one US dollar buys, with an intraday chart and the day's high and low. Banks and money-transfer services quote their own buy and sell rates around this market rate, so the rate you get for a transfer will include their margin.
Why does the rupee weaken against the dollar?
The most common reasons are higher oil prices, which raise India's import bill, foreign investors selling Indian stocks and bonds, and a stronger US dollar globally, often driven by higher US interest rates. The RBI usually slows sharp falls by selling dollars from its reserves rather than defending a fixed level.
Does the RBI control the USD/INR rate?
Not directly. The rate is set by the market, but the RBI intervenes by buying or selling dollars to limit volatility, and it builds or draws down reserves as it does so. That is why USD/INR tends to move in smaller daily steps than many freely floating currencies.
Can Indian residents trade USD/INR?
Yes, through currency futures and options on recognised Indian exchanges such as the NSE and BSE, using a SEBI-registered broker. Trading forex with overseas online brokers is not permitted for residents, and the RBI's Alert List names unauthorised forex platforms.
