About the MPOB crude palm oil price
Palm oil is pressed from the fruit of the oil palm and is the most widely produced vegetable oil in the world, used in cooking oils, margarine, packaged foods, soaps and cosmetics, and as a feedstock for biodiesel. Indonesia and Malaysia together grow most of the world's supply, so Malaysian prices are a reference point for the whole market.
The price on this page is published by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), the Malaysian government agency that regulates and reports on the industry. It is MPOB's daily price for crude palm oil (CPO), local delivered, in Malaysian ringgit (RM) per tonne: a physical market price, with one value per Malaysian trading day.
It is not the Bursa Malaysia crude palm oil futures contract (FCPO), the exchange-traded benchmark that most news headlines quote. The two usually move together, but on any given day they can differ, because the futures price refers to delivery in a later month and trades continuously during the session, while MPOB's figure is a single daily price for local physical delivery.

What moves palm oil prices
- Production in Malaysia and Indonesia, which follows a seasonal cycle and responds to rainfall, with dry spells such as El Niño years tending to cut yields months later.
- Monthly supply and demand figures from MPOB (production, exports and end-of-month stocks), and cargo surveyors' export estimates during the month.
- Demand from the largest importers, especially India and China, and changes to their import duties.
- Competing vegetable oils, above all soybean oil, whose price sets the alternative for food manufacturers and refiners.
- Crude oil prices and biodiesel blending mandates in Indonesia and Malaysia, which decide how much palm oil goes into fuel.
- Export levies and policy in Indonesia, the largest exporter, and the ringgit's exchange rate: a weaker ringgit makes ringgit-priced oil cheaper for foreign buyers.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the Bursa Malaysia palm oil futures (FCPO) price?
No. This page shows the Malaysian Palm Oil Board's official daily price for crude palm oil, local delivered, in ringgit per tonne, which is a physical market price. The Bursa Malaysia FCPO futures contract is a separate, exchange-traded price for delivery in a later month. The two usually move in the same direction but are not the same number.
Why is the latest price a day or two old?
MPOB publishes one price per Malaysian trading day, usually one or two business days after the day it refers to. The page always shows the date the price is for. There is no price for weekends or Malaysian public holidays, so the previous price shown is the previous trading day's.
Why is there no intraday chart or day range?
MPOB's series has a single value per trading day and no intraday prices, so a high, low, open or live chart would have to be invented. The chart plots one point per published trading day instead.
What unit is the palm oil price in?
Malaysian ringgit (RM, ISO code MYR) per metric tonne of crude palm oil. International prices are often quoted in US dollars per tonne; converting needs the ringgit exchange rate on the same day.
What happens if MPOB's data cannot be reached?
FXMARE fetches MPOB's published series a couple of times a day and keeps a copy. If the source cannot be reached, or its newest price is more than ten days old, the page says the data is temporarily unavailable instead of showing an old or estimated price.
