What it is

Average hourly earnings track the month-on-month change in private-sector wages, published within the Employment Situation report. It is the most timely broad gauge of US wage growth.

Why it matters to traders

Wage growth is a key input to services inflation, so a hot earnings print can overshadow a soft payrolls headline. The Fed watches it for signs that the labour market is feeding a wage-price spiral.
