What it is
Japan's Cabinet Office reports quarterly gross domestic product in two stages. A preliminary estimate comes roughly six to seven weeks after the quarter ends, and a revised second estimate about a month later folds in fuller source data. The headline here is the seasonally adjusted, non-annualised quarter-on-quarter change; the annualised rate often quoted in Japanese media is roughly four times larger.
Why it matters to traders
GDP is one of the broadest inputs to the Bank of Japan's policy outlook. A reading stronger than expected tends to support expectations of tighter policy and can lift the yen. A contraction or a miss can push those expectations back. That makes the release a swing factor for the yen and Japanese equities.
