What it is
The Census Bureau's advance retail-sales report measures the month-on-month change in the total value of sales at US retail and food-service outlets, the broadest read on consumer spending.
Why it matters to traders
Consumer spending drives roughly two-thirds of US GDP, so retail sales is a key growth barometer. A strong control-group reading lifts GDP-nowcasts and the dollar; a miss revives slowdown fears.
