What it is
The Bank of England's nine-member Monetary Policy Committee sets Bank Rate at eight scheduled meetings a year. The decision is announced at 12:00 UK time together with the vote split, the Monetary Policy Summary and the minutes of the meeting; at four of those meetings the Bank also publishes its quarterly Monetary Policy Report.
Why it matters to traders
The Bank Rate decision is one of the most closely watched scheduled events for sterling and short-dated gilts. Markets trade the vote split as closely as the headline: a change in how many of the nine MPC members vote to raise, cut or hold can move the pound even when Bank Rate itself is unchanged.
