What to expect

The consensus forecast of 80.5 is below the previous reading of 81.9, so the market expects a lower US CB Consumer Confidence figure than last time.

What it is

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index measures households' assessment of current business and labour-market conditions and their expectations for the next six months, based on a monthly survey.

Why it matters to traders

Confidence can feed into future household spending, so a reading above forecast tends to be read as supportive for consumption and the dollar, and a miss as a warning sign; the gap versus expectations usually matters more than the level itself. The expectations sub-index and the labour-market differential (the share of respondents saying jobs are 'plentiful' minus those saying they are 'hard to get') are watched as early signals for consumer spending and the jobs market.
