What to expect

The consensus forecast of 2.65% matches the previous reading of 2.65%, so the market expects Eurozone ECB Main Refinancing Rate to come in unchanged.

What it is

The European Central Bank's Governing Council sets three key rates for the euro area; the deposit facility rate is the operative one for money markets. The decision is followed about 30 minutes later by the ECB President's press conference.

Why it matters to traders

The ECB sets monetary policy for every country that uses the euro, so its decisions ripple across the euro, Bunds and European equities. The press conference frequently moves markets more than the decision itself, as traders look for hints about the future path of rates.

What to watch in the release

  • The deposit facility rate is the number money markets actually price. The main refinancing rate leads the headlines but is not the operative rate for overnight liquidity, so check which one a quote refers to.
  • How the statement describes the policy stance, and whether that wording changed from the previous meeting, usually carries more information than the decision itself when the outcome was already widely expected.
  • At the meetings that publish updated staff projections, the inflation and growth forecasts for the far end of the horizon are the key signal for where the Governing Council thinks rates need to settle.
  • The press conference that follows routinely produces the larger move, and most of it tends to arrive during the question-and-answer session rather than the prepared remarks.

How the market typically reacts

The euro, Bund yields and European equity indices react in two distinct waves: the decision, then the press conference about half an hour later. When the rate outcome is fully priced, the first wave can be almost silent and all of the volatility arrives with the press conference — a pattern that repeatedly catches out traders who close their screens after the headline. Because the ECB sets policy for a currency bloc rather than a single country, a surprise can also show up in the yield spreads between euro-area government bonds, not just in the euro itself.
